The classic American cheeseburger is very easy to make and all too delicious. Succulent ground beef with crispy bacon and a slightly sweet sauce served on a golden-brown potato bun.

High Protein
Ingredients
  • Bacon
    8 slices
  • 80/20 Ground Beef
    1.5 pounds
  • Onion, sliced
    1 medium
  • Iceberg Lettuce
    8 leaves
  • Dill Pickles, sliced
    12 slices
  • Thousand Island Dressing (go to recipe)
    4 tablespoons
  • Potato Buns
    4 rolls
  • Salt
Directions
  • Step 1
Place bacon in a large shallow pan over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2
Flipping occasionally, cook the bacon until crispy, about 20 minutes. Reserve rendered bacon fat.
  • Step 3
In the same pan, toast the potato buns until well browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Step 4
Split the beef into equal parts and form patties using your hands. Make large indents into one side of each beef patty.
  • Step 5
After the patties are formed, season well with salt all around the outside.
  • Step 6
Use a cast iron skillet on high heat with a bit of bacon fat.
  • Step 7
Place the patty on the skillet flat-side down (indented-side up). Cook until you can see the meat is cooked halfway up the burger, about 4 minutes, then flip.
  • Step 8
Immediately after flipping, add two slices of american cheese
  • Step 9
When the cheese is hugging the burger around the edges, you can remove it and place it onto a toasted potato bun.
  • Step 10
Assemble the rest of the ingredients on the burger and enjoy.
Chef's notes
  • Do not add salt until AFTER forming the beef patties. Mixing salt into the ground beef can lead to a tougher burger.
  • Steam rises within the burger while cooking, so a patty without an indent will result in a puffy burger as opposed to flat.
  • Toast the buns well to make sure they do not become soggy when you add the meat and thousand island dressing.
  • As a warning, expect lots of smoke to form when placing the burger patties on the pan. This is completely normal, especially when you want to form a nice crust.
