Savory shredded beef and cheese with caramelized onions and peppers generously stuffed into an arepa.

Ingredients
  • 4 pieces
  • Beef, shredded
    1 pound
  • Garlic, minced
    2 cloves
  • Red Bell Pepper, sliced
    1/2 medium
  • Onion, sliced
    1 medium
  • Sabana Cheese, shredded
    6 ounces
  • Cumin powder
    1 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper
    to taste
  • Salt
    to taste
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Butter
    1/4 stick
Directions
  • Step 1
    Add vegetable oil to a wide pan over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2
    Add onions and cook until they begin to brown, about 15 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Add sliced red peppers and cook for another 10 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  • Step 5
    Add shredded beef and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Step 6
    Add black pepper, cumin powder, and salt. Taste to adjust to your liking.
  • Step 7
    To serve: slice arepas in half, leaving one edge intact. Spread a generous amount of melted butter on the inside. Add cheese, meat and vegetable filling, followed by more cheese.
Chef's notes
  • Gouda or any mild cheese will work as a great substitute.
  • If the filling is not spilling out every opening, then you didn't put enough.
