Savory shredded beef and cheese with caramelized onions and peppers generously stuffed into an arepa.
Ingredients
- Arepas (go to recipe)4 pieces
- Beef, shredded1 pound
- Garlic, minced2 cloves
- Red Bell Pepper, sliced1/2 medium
- Onion, sliced1 medium
- Sabana Cheese, shredded6 ounces
- Cumin powder1 teaspoon
- Black Pepperto taste
- Saltto taste
- Vegetable Oil
- Butter1/4 stick
Directions
- Step 1Add vegetable oil to a wide pan over medium-high heat.
- Step 2Add onions and cook until they begin to brown, about 15 minutes.
- Step 3Add sliced red peppers and cook for another 10 minutes.
- Step 4Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Step 5Add shredded beef and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Step 6Add black pepper, cumin powder, and salt. Taste to adjust to your liking.
- Step 7To serve: slice arepas in half, leaving one edge intact. Spread a generous amount of melted butter on the inside. Add cheese, meat and vegetable filling, followed by more cheese.
Chef's notes
- Gouda or any mild cheese will work as a great substitute.
- If the filling is not spilling out every opening, then you didn't put enough.
